“…I thought I had won that round but soon discovered one of my favorite hardcover books in shreds. I was engaged in a battle of wits with a baby Basset Hound and I was not holding my own very well.

Down to the pet store I went. It was time to drag out the heavy artillery. Annie might have had a criminally brilliant mind, but I had a credit card.

I drove home, banging and clanking, with my new weapon and set it up in the living room. It was a large wire kennel. It was roomy and airy and would be known from that day forth as the Bad Dog Box.

The next time Annie wandered into the kitchen and pooped almost on my feet, she was escorted firmly but gently to the Bad Dog Box. I set the timer and she sat there in solitary splendor for 15 minutes. Even though I was in the kitchen and she was in the living room, out of my line of vision, I could feel those baleful brown eyes burning holes through the walls and into my back. I could almost smell the smoke rising from my tee-shirt.

After 15 minutes, I let her out. She stalked out with an air of slightly ruffled dignity, stopped, looked me right in the eye, and huffed a sniff of disgust down her long, pointed nose.”
